Chichester Ronin Judo Club Celebrate Three Great Achievements

20th August 2007: Chichester Ronin Judo Club had a lot to celebrate this week not only did its president Mr Ralph Smith reach his 90th birthday two members of the club were also awarded their 1st Dan black belts. To celebrate Ralph’s 90th birthday various old friends & members watched as the clubs junior and senior members put on a superb demonstration of Kata & Randori. After the demonstration Ralph Smith awarded two members of the Club special trophies, the trophies were awarded in recognition for them attaining their 1st Dan black belts, both Jake Ongly-Snook and Ilona Few have been with the club for a number of years both as junior and now as senior judoka. Both have work hard to achieve this mile stone, unlike some other martial arts it takes a number of years of commitment to physical and technical training before a Judoka attains their black belt. All the coaches, fellow black belts & Senior and junior judoka of the club would like to congratulate them on their 1st Dan’s and also to remind them that this achievement is not the arrival but the beginning, good luck to you both in your future achievements. P Barnett Chairman\Coach Chichester Ronin Judo Club.

Club Championships & Silver Clubmark Presentation

Chichester Ronin Judo Club (CRJC) held its annual club championships this weekend in which junior members competed against each other demonstrating their level of competence and ability for some of the students it was their first ever taste of a competition, the evening was a complete success, results are listed below. During the evenings event Chichester Ronin Judo Club was presented with Silver Club Mark by Andrew Moshanov Technical Director for the British Judo Association, Andrew's résumé is impressive to say the least he’s a 6th Dan in judo he was Coach to the Soviet Unions women's team, he has also been Coach to Taiwan women's team & Russian Technical Director now he is the Technical Director to the BJA, Andrew presented the award to Peter Barnett Chairman / Coach of the Chichester Ronin Judo Club who highlighted that this award was due to the commitment of all the coaches and helpers at the club, the parents and children no one person is responsible for this award it is down to everyone’s hard work.

Chichester Ronin Judo Club was the first Judo Club in the whole of the UK to achieve Silver Clubmark. Only one year on from achieving Bronze, and with no clubs having yet achieved Gold, this represents and outstanding achievement in recognition of the excellence with which the CRJC is run, its teaching, links with local clubs and development its of Judo. The Clubmark certificate is awarded by Sport England to clubs demonstrating excellence in the way they plan, organise and run their club including the way they support and develop the participants and volunteers. Silver Clubmark, awarded by the British Judo Association (BJA) in association with Sport England, builds upon the entry level, Bronze, by adding requirements for higher qualified coaching, the establishment of satellite clubs and many other requirements.

Also presented during the evening by the Chichester Friends of Chartres was the Colin Tupper/Guy Bisson Award this was presented to Kathryn and Helen Cartwright by Margaret Brown & Linda Rice of the Friends of Chartres. This award was unanimously agreed by all the Coaches and was awarded to two young ladies Kathryn and Helen Cartwright. The pair are so difficult to split in commitment and attitude towards Judo and the Club. They attend twice a week regularly; they have achieved an extremely high standard not just in competitive judo - but also in Kata which is a form of judo that not all clubs offer. I feel it is also that they are extremely encouraging to other youngsters that give them the edge they are extremely quiet and shy, studious and a pleasure to teach - but formidable on the mat. This is the first time we have jointly offered an award; however it really is impossible to split them for their efforts, helpfulness and commitment. All traits that the Award epitomises.

Karen French, Regional Club Development officer for the BJA added that “as we move closer to 2012 and the Olympic games, it is good to see so many Judo clubs around the country achieving Clubmark status and developing the support structure that will not only allow our very best talent to flourish, but also provides access for everyone, no matter what their ability or age." The official presentation of the Silver Clubmark award is to occur early 2007 - Picture of 2005 Bronze Clubmark presentation by Densign White, Chairman of the British Judo Association.
